Dave,
I have Line 6 pod that I use for my Tele in the studio sometimes but I am not happy with it. I tried it on my steel and it didn't cut it either. The best thing that I have found for direct recording is the small inexpensive Sans Amp. It really has the tone and is very quiet. It also lets the natural tone of your guitar show up on the recording. Well I hope this helps a little.
Keep Pickin!!!!
