Early Lashley Legrande mystery

Post by Jim Pitman »

Recently, a good friend of mine passed and his wife has asked me to broker the sale of his Lashley Legrande. It's a black mica D10 with long keyhead, 8 +6 in great shape. Currently it is set up for a tall person with pedal rod extensions and front leg sleeves that anchor the pedal rack low. This could easily be converted back.
It's unusual (I think), from what I have read, in that it has 14 hole pullers yet the front apron does not have the "II" after the "Lashley Legrande". The serial number is low, 870L.
Do you think this Is an early II, transition, or were the pullers changed?
This is in the interest of accurately describing the guitar when I post it for sale here on the forum. I need to figure out the copedent then will do so shortly.

Not necessarily, it could have come from Emmons that way.

So Erv, would that suggest that it was somewhere in the transition from LL1 to LL2?
Were there other changes made to the LL2 that this guitar may not have?
Was the shorter key-head/guitar necessarily a LL2 change?

I have a D-10 Lashley Legrande #796L with all 14 hole pullers
Estimated build around 91' (from Billy Knowles)Jack Strayhorn era of production
Many have said that the LL2 decals didn't make it on the early production LL2 Guitars

My LeGrande (not LeGrande II) also came from the factory with 14 hole bellcranks.

My understanding is the LL ll were not designated until the counterforce LL lll were released. The 14 hole bellcranks were quietly introduced about 1990.

Legrande serial numbers below 900 can be 4 hole pullers or 14 whole pullers. It was kinda luck of the draw unless the buyer specified 14 hole pullers. I've seen a few 1000 serial numbers that had 4 hole cranks. I have a 6xx serial number that has machined 14 hole pullers. I was told it is the second one they built. Hal Rugg got the first Legrande with 14 hole machined pullers. Or bellcranks as Emmons called them. b.

Jim,
I think your question has been answered.
As far as I know, the only difference was in the bellcranks
However, I might be wrong :D
