Jazz chords on the 10 string E9

Post by Jim Fiegen »

Many players wonder about the possibilities for chords on the 10 string E9 other than straight major and minor triads. Here are a few fresh ideas.

Great stuff Jim! One I like to use is a 13b9. e.g., G13b9 - 3rd fret, raise the 5th string a whole tone & raise the 8th string a half tone. Play strings 5, 6, 8 & 9.

Both your example Jim and Dales are really good ... there's so much available on E9th to get C6thy Jazz chords ... I played C6th on E9th LONG before playing C6th on C6th.

Thanks for this, looks really interesting. Haven't had a chance yet to try it out on my steel, but will get around to it.

Had a look at your website, some nice ideas there. Will be exploring your blogs, just the sort of thing I've been looking for. Thanks again for putting this up.

I'm not sure if Jim would agree with this or not, and not being a music theorist or teacher, I can only relay my experience.

To me, everything "Jazz or C6th" on E9th revolves mainly around that 9th string. I use a lot of 4 string groupings from it, using strings 9865, with 9&8 being a strum with the thumb. That applies whether I'm using that string unaltered or when lowering it, and I also raise it. In fact I lower it in three different places with my setup and raise it a half in another place.

Here's one of many a visual examples I've done with strings/pedals/levers used in the center bottom of video of what I've mentioned above, though you may have to slow it down till you get get the changes in your head.

Another player who excels in making incredible c6 voicings on E9 is Randy Beavers. It just slays me as to his imagination. Great food for thought.

Dale - That’s kinda where I’m at now. I do play C6 on a one neck of my D8 Stringmaster, but it’s not the same thing at all.

Thanks for posting your video, too. I agree with you about string 9 - on 10-string E9, anyway. On an S12, string 11 adds a whole nuther layer of magic dust as far as lower-register chord voicing possibilities.

PS- Ever notice how rarely someone asks about how to play E9 style on the C6 neck? 😎
